If you never try, you'll never know…

I had a conversation with a friend last week over dinner. She told me 2 of her friends, in their late 20s and early 30s, recorded an English album and are giving up their jobs to try to pursue a full time career in the local music scene. After which I asked her about what their previous jobs were, and they are considered high paying, high flying career paths. In which, my reaction was

??

1st of all, nothing against making recording original material as a career, but as we know, the local music industry is tough as our market size is super small. Even though there is definitely a strong force of musicians/bands doing that over here. It’s a force built by passion, and almost all of them hold day jobs to fuel that passion. And these guys usually start off in their teens or early 20s. Which is why I was kinda surprised when I heard of these 2 guys wanting to give up their existing careers to move into purely concentrating on doing this.

But then, a while later, I thought about it. And it perfectly made sense.

Yes, the going is tough, but we only have one life. It doesn’t matter how early or how late you start to move towards your passion. What matters is actually not the goal, but the actions we make, the things we learn while moving towards that goal. We can control our own destiny, so what if we fail? Move on, but don’t regret it, coz at least when we look back in our older years, we can say, ‘yeaaahhh, I did what I wanted to do’.

And then I realised, eeehhh? that’s also exactly what I thought when I decided to try make music my career, back in 96.

The amazing thing is, I’m still doing it =D in this volatile industry, I won’t know how far it’ll take me, but hey…I took that leap…

So yeaahh, there’s a passion burning in everyone of us, if we truly want something, we’ll find someway to pursue it.

But if you never try, you’ll never know.

Jamming is fun!

Been working on a few videos with Jim for our FM Pop Music School lately on guitar playing and other courses, and I actually missed the fun of jamming and interacting with other musicians. Actually, when I 1st started(err, that’s like err in the early 90s) on music, I learned most of my arrangement concepts and production ideas by constantly jamming with other musicians. For those non musicians, jamming is not some kinda weird ritual where we stuff each other with condiments, but just a couple or more musicians interacting and communicating thru our instruments.

It’s thru interacting where you will find out more about the instrument and explore different aspects where it’s not totally possible if done alone. Of course you go play along to some backing tracks. But trust me, it’s not as fun, and when the chemistry is right, there’s way more room to go. Music is always meant to be spontaneous.

So yeah, here’s a short sneak preview of what we were up to last week. Introducing David Ng, our new guitar instructor in FM Pop Music School!

Here we go!

A weekend with NTU Music Express 2011

Went thru the Music Express road show and 2 hour workshop about songwriting with Xiaohan and Jim Lim over the last few days, and the response was great! I could see there are people who were genuinely interested to learn about how we do what we do.

We covered topics like how do you even start writing a song? the basics, the structures, the approach and stuff. Watching the crowd paying much attention, laughing and singing along the songs that we wrote really made our day. We could feel the passion and this is the reason why we wanna do this. To help bring the next generation of writers in so that they can in future share the experience of drawing in the next generation.

Personally, songwriting is really therapy for me, maybe that’s why my songs so tragic, I throw my shit into that piece of 3-4 minutes series of notes and I walk away smiling.

So if you’re interested in songwriting and wanna start somewhere. Why not start now? Here are the details of this regional Mandarin Songwriting Express

PS : I was also quite tickled when this young lady heard of 虽然我愿意 by Wu Jiahui, but never heard of the song 无底洞. Hmmm, looks like we’re really getting old! Those songs are soon going into the 金典老歌 category! haha
